Boundaries are not about building walls—they’re about unlocking freedom.

If you’re struggling with addiction or walking the path of recovery, learning to set healthy boundaries can feel unfamiliar or even impossible. Addiction often leads to a cycle of blurred lines—saying “yes” when you should have said “no,” avoiding conflict, or allowing toxic people and behaviors to overtake you.

But here’s the truth: God cares deeply about boundaries. He created them, models them in Scripture and calls us to live by them—not to restrict us, but to protect us.

At Big Fish Ministries, we believe recovery is more than behavior change—it’s heart change. That includes learning to set boundaries rooted in God’s wisdom, not human willpower.

What Are Healthy Boundaries?

Boundaries are simply the limits you set to protect your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. They define what’s yours to manage—and what’s not.

In recovery, healthy boundaries might look like:

  • Saying no to people or places that trigger relapse
  • Choosing not to engage in toxic relationships
  • Prioritizing time for prayer, rest and community
  • Asking for help without guilt or shame
  • Refusing to be controlled by others’ expectations

Healthy boundaries help you create a safe space where God can heal, restore and guide you.

What Does the Bible Say About Boundaries?

Scripture is full of examples of God setting boundaries for His people, for their good:

  • Proverbs 4:23 – “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
  • Galatians 6:5 – “For each will have to bear his own load.”
  • Matthew 5:37 – “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.”

Jesus Himself set boundaries. He withdrew from crowds to pray (Luke 5:16), didn’t answer every demand (John 11:6), and even walked away from certain situations when necessary (John 6:15).

If Jesus needed boundaries, so do we.

3 Steps to Setting God-Honoring Boundaries in Recovery

1. Ask God for Discernment

Healthy boundaries aren’t always obvious. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you’ve allowed unhealthy patterns or relationships to take root. God’s wisdom brings clarity.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach …” – James 1:5

2. Start Small and Stay Consistent

You don’t have to change everything overnight. Begin with one area where you know change is needed—maybe it’s limiting time with a certain person or carving out a daily devotional time. Over time, your “yes” to God will empower your “no” to anything that pulls you off course.

3. Get Support from a Christ-Centered Community

You weren’t meant to do this alone. In recovery, accountability and encouragement are key. Surround yourself with people who support your boundaries and point you back to Christ.

Why Boundaries Matter in Addiction Recovery

Addiction thrives in chaos, confusion and compromise. Recovery thrives in clarity, truth and purpose.

Healthy boundaries:

  • Help prevent relapse by removing triggers
  • Build self-respect and confidence
  • Create space for spiritual growth
  • Restore broken relationships—starting with your relationship with God

At Big Fish Ministries, we walk alongside men and women in addiction and recovery every day. We’ve seen firsthand how Christ-centered boundaries lead to lasting transformation—not just sobriety, but freedom.
