January is synonymous with fresh starts. The calendar turns, and we begin dreaming of new goals, new habits and new ways to live. It’s a time to reflect on how far we’ve come and where we want to go next.
But as followers of Christ, we know true transformation doesn’t come from willpower or resolutions alone—it comes from surrender.
Surrender: The Foundation of Recovery
In recovery, surrender is not weakness—it’s the starting point of strength. It’s the moment we stop trying to manage our lives on our own and admit that we need God’s help. That moment of honesty opens the door for grace, healing and lasting change.
The very first step toward recovery mirrors what Scripture teaches:
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” — James 4:10
When we surrender, we lay down our pride, our pain and our plans. We stop fighting to control the outcome and start trusting the One who holds it all together.
Surrendering Our Plans for the New Year
At the beginning of a new year, it’s natural to set goals—health goals, financial goals, spiritual goals. These are good things! But even our best intentions can become burdens if we hold them too tightly.
Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
This means our dreams and desires find their truest purpose when we give them back to God. Instead of saying, “God, bless my plans,” we can say, “Lord, make Your plans my plans.” When we surrender our goals, we find peace in knowing that success isn’t about achievement—it’s about obedience.
Living a Life of Daily Surrender
Surrender isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily posture. In recovery, each day we wake up, we must choose to trust God again—to let Him lead, to let Him heal, to let Him write the story.
Whether you’re walking through recovery yourself or coming alongside someone who is, remember this: every surrendered moment is a victory. Every time you choose God’s way over your own, freedom grows a little stronger.
A Prayer for the New Year
“Lord, this year I choose to surrender—to lay down my will, my goals, and my plans at Your feet.
Teach me to trust You with each step of the journey.
Lead me where You want me to go, and use my life for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”
At Big Fish Ministries, we’ve seen again and again that surrender leads to freedom. When we stop striving and start trusting, God does what only He can—He restores and He redeems.
So as you step into 2026, remember: the greatest resolution isn’t to do more, but to surrender more.
